High-Value Engagements Drive Asia MICE Sourcing
Singapore-based event professionals note a critical shift towards high-value engagements in MICE tradeshows, impacting how destinations attract buyers from across Asia-Pacific.

New Focus on Return on Time and Investment
Event planners are becoming more selective about tradeshow attendance, focusing on actual Return on Time (ROT) and Return on Investment (ROI). This shift comes amid corporate travel budget cuts and crowded event calendars. Angela Lee, co-founder of Singapore-based Event & Marketing Solutions MICE, stated that exhibitor quality is paramount for MICE-focused shows.
Patrick Lim, director at The Agency Team in Singapore, echoed this, emphasizing that the quality of networking and exhibitors determines an event's value. Both experts highlight that while large global shows like IMEX and IBTM remain important, effective matchmaking technology must empower buyers, not dictate their schedules.
Destinations Adapt with Targeted Outreach
Regional organizers and tourism boards are moving away from passive online forms to targeted recruitment to attract high-yield decision-makers. Experience Gold Coast (EGC) implemented a multi-tiered recruitment model for its annual hosted buyer program this year.
Andrea Molnar, EGC’s acting director of business events, confirmed that half of their hosted buyer pool was hand-picked through direct outreach. This strategy focused on qualified leads who had not visited the Gold Coast in over a decade. The remaining buyers underwent vetting through an open Expression of Interest process, requiring verifiable group purchasing power.
Immersive Experiences and Rigorous Vetting
EGC also expanded its geographic reach, inviting Asia-Pacific buyers from Malaysia and India for the first time. The program featured enhanced post-show tours, activating products with hotel partners and suppliers, such as a teambuilding activity at Surfers Paradise.
Esther Loo, sales director at Malaysia-based ATA World Travel, noted her renewed interest in Gold Coast for incentive clients after this firsthand experience. Similarly, the Korea MICE Association (KMA) uses multi-channel verification for Korea MICE Expo buyers.
Kyuree Kim, KMA’s senior project manager, cross-checks applicants’ social media profiles and personal notes from international tradeshows to ensure genuine purchasing power.
Implications for Asia's Wedding Industry
For Asia's wedding industry professionals, these trends show a clear path for engaging with destinations and suppliers. Wedding planners and venue sales teams seeking partners for destination weddings or honeymoons should prioritize events that offer curated interactions and immersive experiences over sheer volume of attendees.
Tourism boards aiming to attract wedding business can adopt similar targeted outreach strategies, vetting potential buyers and showcasing their offerings through activated, experiential programs. This approach ensures valuable connections and a stronger return on time invested for all parties involved in planning significant celebrations across the region.
