Stylists Influence India’s Growing Wedding Economy

India's wedding market represents a significant opportunity for luxury brands, valued at $130 billion. The nation celebrates between 8 and 10 million weddings each year. A 2024 Jeffries report indicates that Indians spend almost twice as much on weddings as they do on education. This substantial market drives luxury brands to seek effective ways to engage affluent couples.

International brands like Bvlgari have created specific items, such as a mangalsutra reinterpreted through Italian design codes. Elie Saab uses platforms like Vogue India's Wedding Atelier to connect with customers.

Mac Cosmetics launched its Indian bridal campaign, Forever in Mac, featuring model Tania Shroff and supermodel Ujjwala Raut, styled by creative director Nicola Formichetti.

Leading Stylists Shape Bridal Wardrobes

A select group of wedding stylists serves as key advisors for ultra-high-net-worth Indian families. These professionals guide choices on attire and brands, both local and international. Nisha Kundnani, who founded Bridelan in 2015, pioneered this specialized service. Her company provides styling for grooms, brides, and guests, including on-site services during the celebrations.

Kundnani observed the shift from digital blogs to Instagram and the rise of destination weddings, solidifying the need for professional styling. Anaita Shroff Adajania, a prominent figure in India's fashion scene, also transitioned from an editorial background.

She styled Isha Ambani for her brother Anant Ambani's wedding, working with designers like Schiaparelli, Chanel, and Miss Sohee to create custom looks.

Discernment and Flexibility for International Brands

Ami Patel, another sought-after wedding stylist, worked with actor Alia Bhatt for her nuptials and Priyanka Chopra for her wedding to Nick Jonas. Patel believes a wedding stylist's choice holds as much weight as the garment label itself. Stylists offer discernment, guiding clients on specific pieces, customization, and how attire integrates into the overall wedding vision.

While Indian designers remain dominant for ceremonial wear, international brands can enter the market through Western silhouettes for receptions, sangeets, and afterparties. Shroff Adajania notes that gowns, once uncommon, are now a natural part of an Indian bridal wardrobe. Patel advises international brands to offer flexibility rather than fixed global templates to succeed.

Market Impact for Asia's Wedding Industry

For Asia's wedding industry professionals and luxury brands targeting the region, understanding the role of these influential Indian stylists is crucial. Their expertise directly shapes purchasing decisions for high-value celebrations. Brands seeking to penetrate the Indian market should engage with these stylists to adapt offerings to local preferences and trends.

Couples planning weddings in India can benefit from the curated selections and unique visions these stylists bring, ensuring access to a diverse range of local and international designers. This approach allows for tailored wedding wardrobes that reflect both tradition and contemporary style, driving continued growth in India's substantial wedding economy.
