Bali Governor Wayan Koster met with Airbnb's Southeast Asia management on 11 February 2026. The Governor called for Airbnb to ensure all villas and tourism services listed on its platform in Bali comply with local regulations and tax obligations. This initiative forms part of Bali's broader effort to create a high-quality, dignified, and culture-focused tourism system.
Governor Koster stated that businesses must adhere to government rules and contribute to maintaining Bali's tourism quality. He emphasized that non-compliant operators would face removal from Airbnb's platform and potential legal proceedings.
Airbnb Commits to Compliance
Shanta Arul, Airbnb's Public Policy Lead for Southeast Asia, confirmed the company's commitment to Bali's government regulations. Airbnb pledged to encourage its partners to pay taxes and to help disseminate the Bali Provincial Government's rules. The company stated it takes licensing requirements seriously and stands ready to collaborate with authorities.
Governor Koster also invited Airbnb to work with the "Love Bali" digital platform. This platform supports the provincial administration's efforts to increase collection of the Foreign Tourist Levy.
Protecting Bali's Tourism Industry
Governor Koster stressed that enforcing compliance among tourism businesses protects Bali from degradation. He warned that damage to the island would harm its tourism image and reduce visitor numbers. The Governor stated that under his leadership, all businesses are welcome if they follow regulations and share responsibility for Bali's sustainability.
He highlighted the extensive government investment in preserving the island's environment and culture. Koster concluded that without Balinese culture, tourism would not exist, and a failing tourism sector impacts all island businesses.
