Hilton Debuts Motto Brand in Kyoto, Expanding Japan Portfolio
The Motto by Hilton Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is set to open in 2029, marking a strategic move to diversify hotel offerings beyond luxury in Japan.

Motto by Hilton Arrives in Kyoto
Hilton is introducing its Motto by Hilton brand to Japan with a new hotel in Kyoto. The Motto by Hilton Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is scheduled to welcome guests in 2029. This opening will bring Hilton's total number of properties in Kyoto to seven.
The move shows Hilton's strategy to broaden its offerings beyond its existing luxury presence in the country, aiming to capture a wider range of travelers.
Expanding Across Market Segments
The company is actively developing both its luxury and lifestyle properties across Japan. An example is ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts, which opened in 2021. An upcoming Curio Collection by Hilton hotel will further enhance lifestyle options in Kyoto. Simultaneously, Hilton plans to introduce more accessible brands to the country.
These include Hampton by Hilton and Spark by Hilton, catering to a broader market segment. Clarence Tan, Hilton's Senior Vice President, stated that while luxury and lifestyle will remain a major growth driver, mid-market brands will become increasingly important in Japan's hotel landscape.
Supporting Japan's Tourism Ambitions
This strategic expansion aligns with Japan's national tourism objectives. The country aims to attract 60 million international visitors annually by 2030. Achieving this target will require a significant increase in available hotel rooms, particularly those offering more varied price points.
Hilton's move to diversify its brand portfolio, from luxury to mid-market, directly supports this anticipated demand for diverse accommodation options as visitor numbers grow.
More Options for Asia's Wedding Couples
For couples considering destination weddings or honeymoons in Japan, Hilton's expanded portfolio offers greater choice. The introduction of mid-market brands like Motto by Hilton, Hampton, and Spark provides more accessible price points for accommodation, potentially making Japan a more viable option for a broader range of budgets.
This growth in hotel inventory provides wedding planners and couples with diverse venue and lodging solutions. It supports the increasing interest in Japan as a premier Asian wedding and honeymoon destination, offering varied options for pre-wedding shoots and guest accommodation.
